Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua

Good morning. The Catholic Catechism offers some amazing instruction where it comes to parenting. In 2207 the catechism notes that the family is the basic building block of society. “Authority, stability, and a life of relationships within the family constitute the foundations for freedom, security, and fraternity within society. The family is the community in which, from childhood, one can learn moral values, begin to honor God, and make good use of freedom. Family life is an initiation into life in society.” By our example as parents we are able to teach our children that true freedom comes with following the rules and this is precisely what Jesus calls us to do in today’s Gospel. By our example as parents we instruct our children in “self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery – what the Catechism teaches us are “the preconditions of all true freedom.”

Unfortunately in today’s culture the family is under considerable attack. While considerable monies are pumped into entitlement programs and social service support and educational programs which entice participation, the monies would be better spent providing programs which raise up family life and support healthy family values. One of the most serious social problems of our time is that of fatherlessness, there are those would say that almost every social ill faced by America's children is related to fatherlessness. If we wish to correct the ills of our society we would do well to provide for healthy families. As parents we have a grave responsibility to provide a good example to our children. We have the first responsibility for the education of our children. As parents it is our responsibility to provide a home wherein the words of Saint Anthony, whose life we celebrate today, are truly embraced: “Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. We are full of words but empty of actions, and therefore are cursed by the Lord, since he himself cursed the fig tree when he found no fruit but only leaves. It is useless for a man to flaunt his knowledge of the law if he undermines its teaching by his actions.” Let our example serve toward encouraging our children to be all God intends for them to be. What will our example be today? Make a great day!

Today we recall the good life, gifts, and work of Saint Anthony of Padua.
