Feast of Saint Bernadette Soubirous

Good morning. In God's plan, a marriage is for a life-time. Our humanness sometimes can be led by the ways of a secular world and cause us to look at things differently, which is why as couples we need to constantly pray and allow the Spirit to guide us and look to the Church for support and enrichment of our marriage. As a couple we need to be open to the Spirit in our marriage and share our own individual spirits with each other. Much as the Spirit calls us to do God’s will in our lives, the same Spirit directs us to give of ourselves and drives us to be one with one another, directing us to be one together in the Spirit. Jesus, in today’s Gospel, assures us that if we allow the Spirit to be a part of our lives we will better see and do what we need to do toward keeping our marriage energized. The Spirit is the energy behind the sanctification of our lives. If we allow our marriage to be driven by the Spirit each of us will provide the energy and love the other needs to be life-giving to the other. There are times when our self-interest can get in the way of responding to the prompting of the Spirit and prevents us from responding to God’s desires for us. Sometimes our differences can be the cause of misunderstandings and hurting, but our openness to the Spirit provide for the necessary love and energizing words and actions to continue being one in the Spirit. This same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is present to us in our marriage to raise us from our brokenness and provide the energy we need to be life-giving to one another. Just as our saint for today, Saint Bernadette allowed the Spirit to lead her down a path of holiness, so too, if as a couple we are open to the Spirit in our lives we will be directed where we need to go. Make a great day!

Today we recall the good life, gifts, and work of Saint Bernadette Soubirous.
