Feast of Saint Joseph Cafasso

Good morning.  Is your marriage in a rut?  Are you waking up every morning and it feels like your marriage is on the movie set with Punxsutawney Phil and Bill Murray in the 1993 film Groundhog Day?  Does it feel like you and your spouse are doomed to spending the rest of eternity reliving the same things again, and again, and again?  Well, then toss caution to the wind and dare to be different, that’s right, dare to be unpredictable, dare to have the marriage you only dream of.  Dare to love enough to do something different, to trust enough to try something new.

The nice thing about habits is they are predictable and they are economical.  Habits allow us to go through our daily lives without spending a great deal of time figuring out what to do.  It is like being on auto pilot, we just do it. We do the same things over and over again and give it absolutely no thought.  In some aspects of our lives this functions fairly well, but in other areas not.  We often engage in habitual behaviors that time and again just don’t work.  Like most people we repeatedly do things that don’t work, but we expect different results.  We are reluctant to change out of fear; we are reluctant to change, to do something different because we lack the faith to reach out beyond that which is familiar.  Faith is about things hoped for and things not seen. Fear is the opposite, it is familiar but it paralyzes us.  In this morning’s Gospel (Mk 5:21-43) the woman was healed because she dared to reach beyond her fear. Sometimes our fear keeps us stuck because we are reluctant to admit that we are the one that needs to change.

This Groundhog Day, reach beyond your fears; allow your faith to propel you and your spouse into the marriage you desire.  Get out of the rut by doing something different. Our Saint for today, Saint Joseph Cafasso said “We are born to love, we live to love, and we will die to love still more.”  So, dare to love your spouse enough to do something different.  What can you do different today for your marriage?   Make a great day!

Today we recall the good life, gifts, and works of Saint Joseph Cafasso.
